Mitsubishi looks ready to bring their vision of an electric future to the Philippines with the introduction of the Outlander Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV), and the Dendo Drive Station – a system that is designed to provide homes and small buildings with electrical power by utilizing various energy sources.

Dendo Drive Station

The Dendo Drive Station is a next-generation showroom that utilizes technology showcased by Mitsubishi’s Dendo Drive House in Japan. The system is equipped with solar panels, bi-directional chargers, storage batteries and inverters which allow power to flow either from the showroom to the car to charge it, or from the car to the building to provide power. The system stores energy that it accumulates from solar panels, or through the electricity grid, which can be used to charge both pure Electric Vehicles (EV) and PHEVs, or serve as a backup source of power in case of power loss from the main grid. In addition, the Dendo Drive Station also accepts power from EV and PHEV, using the vehicle’s battery to provide power to the building in times of high demand or emergencies.

Five Mitsubishi dealers have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC) to be the first in the country to showcase the technology. These dealerships are Union Motor Corporation, Fast Autoworld Philippines Corporation, Motorplaza, Inc., SFM Sales Corporation and Mindanao Integrated Commercial Enterprises, Inc., covering five regions around the country. Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) has opened 79 Dendo Drive Stations in Japan since its introduction in 2016, and the Philippines will be the second country outside of Japan to utilize this technology.

“Similar to Japan, the Philippines is a country that often experiences many natural disasters,” said Osamu Masuko, MMC’s chairman of the board. “I believe with the technology of the Dendo Drive Station, communities will be provided with a dependable self-sustaining power source that does not only generate efficient energy supply but also serves as a reliable electrical source during emergency power shortages.”

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

Coinciding with the launch of the Dendo Drive Station is the introduction of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV SUV. The Outlander PHEV was developed around an electrically-powered engine and powertrain, with a unique architecture consisting of a front and rear electric motor with no gearbox. It utilizes three modes which dictate how the vehicle uses its engine and electric motors.

In EV mode, the Outlander PHEV runs completely on electric power from its batteries. In Series mode, the motors are powered by electricity from the drive battery and from the Outlander’s 2.4-liter, 16-valve four-cylinder engine generator when residual charge in the battery is low or when accelerating and other times when higher motor output is needed. In Parallel Hybrid mode, the car is driven by its motors and by the engine simultaneously at higher vehicle speeds for maximum efficiency.

Since its official global launch in 2013, the Outlander PHEV has been rolled out to more than 50 countries, with global sales reaching over 200,000 units, becoming the world’s best-selling Plug-In Hybrid. Alongside its environmental performance, the Outlander PHEV provides a safe driving experience, achieving a maximum five-star rating from ASEAN NCAP (New Car Assessment Program). The SUV comes equipped with seven airbags together with an Anti-lock Braking System, Blind Spot Warning and other safety technologies, scoring a total of 87.61 out of 100 points between the Adult Occupant Protection, Child Occupant Protection, and Safety Assist Technologies tests.

During the 2016 Kumamoto and 2018 Hokkaido Eastern Iburi earthquakes, the Outlander PHEV was able to operate as a mobile source of electricity to assist the community. Mitsubishi aims to do the same for the Philippines, where natural calamities are abundant.

Both the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and the Dendo Drive Station technology will be showcased in the upcoming Manila International Auto Show this April.
